Westland residents enjoy the comforts and amenities of suburban life while living close enough to downtown Detroit to experience the sports, culture and fun that the city has to offer. Westland is also near many great communities in Wayne County including Plymouth, Wayne and Canton where our auto service shop, Fifties Lube & Oil Change, is located. Since we started operating in 2009, we have been performing maintenance services for Westland residents and ensuring they have reliable transportation to get them to work on the weekdays and out for fun on the weekends.
Like most areas in southeast Michigan, settlers began arriving in Westland in the 1820’s. Before then, many were coming through the area on their way out west in order to trade with the Potawatomi natives and Algonquian tribes. Westland has experienced many changes since the beginning of the 19th century. The area around Westland was originally called Bucklin County and covered many of the cities that currently surround the city. The county began to split then changed names then turned into townships. In 1835, a section of this land decided to split and officially became Livonia. The cities of Wayne, Inkster and Garden City soon followed suit. There are a few communities that enjoy receiving their names from cities in China. Canton is one such city and Nankin is another. Westland was actually originally called Nankin, from Nanking in China, but the name Westland was finally adopted as the official city name when it was incorporated in 1966. Over the years, Livonia has attempted to annex the territory which prompted the official establishment of the city of Westland.
Although located in the western suburbs of Detroit, the city is actually named after the Westland Shopping Mall. The mall received its name because it wanted to have noticeable comparisons to the Northland Shopping Mall and Eastland Shopping Mall. This complex is still around and boasts over 100 stores including anchor stores and restaurants. The Westland Historic Village Park is a fun place to explore and is dedicated to the preservation of the history of Nankin Township, Westland and Wayne County General Hospital which also became known as the Eloise Complex. The Wayne County General Hospital opened in 1839 as a poor house as well as farm. It eventually turned into a hospital and asylum.
Throughout the 20th century, Westland became the suburban home of many people working in the automotive industry. While Fifties Lube & Oil Change does not build cars, we take a lot of pride in being able to maintain them for everyone who comes in including those factory workers on the line. We inspect a vehicle meticulously so we can ensure our customers that they can hit the road safely. If there are any problems that need to be addressed, we will advise them and offer a way to help. Sometimes this may mean telling them an issue exists and referring them to an auto service center equipped to make the repairs.
There are many great activities available to Westland residents. The Mike Modano Ice Arena is where young aspiring hockey players can learn how to play the game while others can enjoy a recreational skate or throw a birthday party. In the hot summers, Westland has their H2O Splash Zone available for kids of all ages looking to cool down.
For a city that has been around for quite some time, it is good to see that progression never stops.
The city of Westland approved a Shop & Dine District built with the help of major companies like Target, Meijer, MJR Theatre and the Westland Shopping Mall. Their investment dollars will help renovate the city and ensure it remains a clean, safe and fun place to live and visit. Some of the public buildings such as the fire station have received upgrades as well.
